UNISON Fife urges public to email councillors to save school libraries

UNISON Fife is asking parents, carers and residents to email their local councillors today to protect school libraries across Fife.

The union has launched an online tool that lets people send a letter to councillors in minutes, calling for a properly staffed library in every secondary school, a pause on cuts or relocations, and clear local standards for space and staffing.

UNISON Fife Branch Secretary Debbie Fyfe said: “Libraries in Fife are being scaled back, locked, or left without a qualified librarian. That means fewer chances for children to discover books, build confidence and get help with reading and research. We need the public’s voice now. Email your councillors and tell them to protect school libraries and the staff who run them.”

UNISON says devolved school management can lead to money intended for librarian posts being diverted elsewhere, leaving pupils with different levels of access depending on their school. The union has written to all councillors asking for a commitment to staffed secondary school libraries and a short pause on any further reductions while provision is reviewed with unions and stakeholders.

Debbie Fyfe added: “Fife has invested heavily in devices for pupils. Librarians make that investment count. They teach young people how to find and use information safely and support literacy, inclusion and wellbeing. A library without a librarian is not the same service.”
