School Libraries Matter – A Message from UNISON Fife
Today, UNISON Fife has written to all Fife councillors (Please see attachments below) to raise serious concerns about the decline in school library provision — including the reduction and loss of qualified school librarians across our schools.
School libraries are far more than shelves of books. They are safe, inclusive learning spaces where young people discover a love of reading, develop research and digital skills, and receive vital support from trained professionals who understand how to nurture learning and curiosity.
With the Council’s huge investment in 1:1 digital devices, the role of qualified librarians is more important than ever — helping pupils navigate reliable information, build digital literacy, and use these devices for meaningful learning.
Every child in Fife deserves access to a well-resourced library and a professional librarian to support their learning, wellbeing, and future opportunities. The loss of these services risks widening the educational gap and undermining the very skills our young people need most.
